Restoration comedy demonstrates the interplay possible between the stage and the audience. Thus, this text argues that only through a performance approach can the plays of Etherege, Wycherley, Dryden, Shadwell, Vanbrugh, Congreve and Farquhar recover a lost sense of their value.
